Our new LGD (livestock guardian dog) has arrived!
Chai is 10 weeks old and just shy of 25 pounds.
When she grows up she’ll be the guardian for our goats, chickens, ducks, and family. Chai is a Anatolian-Kangal mix and they make excellent LGDs.
We bought her as a puppy so that she can grow up with our animals. Some LGDs will kill certain animals if they’re not raised with them. We also wanted a dog that will get along with our other dogs. We were offered an older Anatolian (Chai’s mom) but she will attack other dogs even if they’re part of the same household. While we want Chai to chase off any other dogs that come onto our property, we don’t want her attacking our small dogs.
Why do we want an LGD that chases off other dogs?
Dogs are the #1 predator to livestock.
Yeah, I was pretty surprised to find that out too!
Here’s a picture of Chai’s Daddy:
We’ve been taking Chai for walks out around the property and she’s so curious and interested in everything!
